Osimhen wins Serie A Golden Boot

In a historic achievement, Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen has become the first African footballer to win the Capocannoniere title as the top scorer in the Italian Serie A.

During Napoli’s 2-0 victory over Sampdoria on Sunday, the Nigerian scored his 26th goal of the Serie A season.

Despite the champions dominating possession and creating numerous chances, they were initially unable to find the back of the net. Osimhen attempted three shots during the match, but unfortunately, none of them resulted in a goal. However, after a strong start to the second half, in the 64th minute, Osimhen made the breakthrough. The 24-year-old striker was fouled in the box, winning a penalty. He confidently converted it making it 1-0 for Napoli while notching his 26th goal of the season.

With the 26 goals, Osimhen secured the prestigious Capocannoniere award, becoming the first African player to ever achieve this feat.

Osimhen got going quickly in the 2022-23 season, scoring on his first two appearances before missing four games through injury.

The 24-year-old returned to his goal-scoring ways after his return, scoring six times in five games.. From that point, he only failed to score in eight league games this season, with his goals propelling Napoli to a first league title since 1990. It was Osimhen who scored the goal that sealed the league win for I Partenopei .

The 26th goal took his tally for the club to 26 in 32 league appearances, with only two of those coming from the penalty spot. He scored 17 goals with his right foot, two with his left foot and seven headers.Osimhen and also broke the league’s records for most goals ever by an African player, previously held by George Weah, and most goals in a season by an African player, previously held by Samuel Eto’o.

Next up for Osimhen is helping Nigerian qualify for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations and sifting through big money offers for his services from other European teams.
