Onama gets back to winning ways
David Onama added a fantastic highlight to his reel on Saturday when he got a knockout win over Gabriel Santos at UFC on ABC 5.
Coming off a loss to Nate Landwehr last August, Onama had to fend off some near-submissions from Santos (10-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) in the first round. The Ugandan Onama (11-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) got into a striking groove in the second round of the featherweight contest at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.
He found a clean combination late in the second round, dropping Santos before recreating Israel Adesanya’s famous bow-and-arrow celebration from his victory over Alex Pereira in April.
“That’s my guy, Izzy,” Onama told reporters at the UFC on ABC 5 post-fight news conference. “Izzy fought a Brazilian and I was like, ‘I’m going to do what Izzy did. I’m going to knock this kid out then I’m going to celebrate like Izzy.’ And it showed, so.”
After the win, a thrilled Onama said this is just the beginning of his run at 145 pounds.
“Just let it happen,” Onama said of his more tactical approach during his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. “Don’t rush things. Just let it happen. And tonight it showed.”
