The Dallas Mavericks have named former Toronto Raptors executive Masai Ujiri as their new team president and alternate governor.
Ujiri, 55, spent 12 seasons in Toronto’s front office from 2013 to 2025, where he built the team that won the franchise’s first NBA championship in 2019.
“The Dallas Mavericks are committed to being a world-class organization with a strong culture and a focus on winning championships. Masai Ujiri is one of the top basketball leaders of this generation, and bringing him in is a major step toward achieving our goals,” said Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont. “We’re thrilled to welcome him to the Mavs family and excited about the future of our team.”
Before his time in Toronto, Ujiri served as general manager of the Denver Nuggets from 2010 to 2013, earning NBA Executive of the Year honors for the 2012–13 season. Across his tenure leading both franchises, his teams compiled a 690–504 record with 12 playoff appearances.
“I’m honored to join the Dallas Mavericks at such an important moment for the organization,” Ujiri said. “This franchise has a proud history, passionate fans, and a commitment to winning. I’m excited to work with our players, coaches, and leadership group to build a team that competes at the highest level. We will win in Dallas.”
Ujiri’s hiring concludes a six-month search for new leadership following the firing of general manager Nico Harrison on November 11. Harrison was dismissed after a 3–8 start to the 2025–26 season and mounting fan criticism stemming from the February 2025 trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers.
After Harrison’s departure, Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi served as co-interim general managers.
The Mavericks finished the season with a 26–56 record, their worst since 2017–18, despite a standout year from Rookie of the Year and No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, who averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 70 games.
