Otto Addo sacked by Ghana FA

Ghana have parted ways with head coach Otto Addo, the country’s football association (GFA) announced on Tuesday, with just 72 days remaining before the start of the 2026 World Cup.

The decision came hours after a 2–1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart during preparations for the tournament, which will be held in North America next summer. Ghana had also suffered a heavy 5–1 loss in Austria on Friday.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately,” the association said in a statement.

Addo, a former Borussia Dortmund player, had been appointed for a second stint in March 2024. Despite having Premier League talents such as Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus in his squad, he failed to qualify Ghana for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

During his time in charge, the German-born coach won eight matches and lost nine of his 22 games with the West African side.

Addo, 50, previously led Ghana at the 2022 World Cup after serving as an assistant to Milovan Rajevac. The team secured a 3–2 victory over South Korea in Qatar but were eliminated in the group stage following defeats to Portugal and Uruguay.

Ghana, appearing at their fifth World Cup, have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, England, and Panama.
