Springbok captain Siya Kolisi signs for Stormers

Siya Kolisi is set to return to Cape Town after leaving Sharks (rugby union).

In a statement released Tuesday, Stormers confirmed that the two-time Rugby World Cup-winning South Africa national rugby union team captain will rejoin the team at the end of the current season.

The move will allow Kolisi to be closer to his family while also giving him the opportunity to contribute once again to the team where his professional career began after leaving school.

Kolisi’s rugby journey started in Cape Town, where he built his reputation with the Stormers. He is now set to add to his 118 appearances for the franchise.

After making his Stormers debut in 2012, Kolisi was named captain in 2017. A year later, he was appointed captain of the national team and went on to lead South Africa to Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and again in 2023.

Kolisi left the Stormers for the Sharks in early 2021 before moving to French club Racing 92 following the 2023 World Cup. His time in France was brief, however, and he returned to the Sharks in 2024.

Stormers Rugby CEO Johan le Roux said the club is delighted to welcome Kolisi back.

“Siya is a national icon who has a strong connection with our team and our supporters. He is also a family man who wants to be there for his children as much as possible,” he said.

“These are values that resonate with our club, and given the importance of our heritage in shaping our future, we are thrilled to welcome Siya back and hope he will finish his career in the jersey where it all began.”
