Salah announces Liverpool exit

Mohamed Salah, widely regarded as one of Liverpool FC’s greatest players and a central figure in the club’s modern success, has announced he will leave Anfield at the end of the season.

The Egyptian striker shared the news in an emotional video on social media, reflecting on his journey and connection to the club. “Unfortunately, the day has come… I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season,” said the 33-year-old. He spoke about how deeply the club, the city, and its people have become part of his life, describing Liverpool as more than just a football club, but a passion and a spirit.

Since joining from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has cemented his legacy as one of Liverpool’s all-time greats. During his time at Anfield, he helped the club win major honors, including the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, along with several other trophies.

Individually, Salah’s impact has been extraordinary. He has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, making him the club’s third-highest goalscorer ever, and has won the Premier League Golden Boot four times. Liverpool stated that Salah chose to announce his departure early out of respect and transparency toward the supporters.

His 2024/25 campaign was one of the greatest individual seasons in league history, with 29 goals and 18 assists in 38 matches—matching the all-time record for goal involvements in a single season and setting a new mark for a 38-game campaign. He was named Player of the Season and became the first player to win the Golden Boot, Playmaker Award, and Player of the Season in the same year.

However, this season has been a stark contrast. Salah has struggled for form, endured long goal droughts, and was even dropped for key matches, including fixtures in the Champions League. Tensions also surfaced off the pitch, with a public disagreement involving Liverpool manager Arne Slot, which highlighted a strained relationship during a difficult period.

Despite the challenges, Salah recently showed signs of resurgence, scoring a spectacular goal in a 4–0 Champions League victory over Galatasaray—his 50th goal in the competition.

Known as the “Egyptian King,” Salah remains adored by fans, with murals of him decorating the streets around Anfield. In his farewell message, he expressed gratitude and emotion: leaving is never easy, he said “ This club will always be my home to me and to my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”
