Gorgui Dieng announces retirement
Senegalese veteran Gorgui Dieng has announced his retirement from the NBA at the age of 33. Stepping away from the game,the former 21st pick in the 2013 Draft will be staying in San Antonio where he currently works for the Spurs as a “basketball operations representative.”
“Everyone around me knew I wanted to play for ten years and that’s how it’s been,” Dieng said. «When I reached my tenth year, I knew I had reached my goal. “It was time to stop and try new things,” he acknowledged.
The 33-year-old averaged 3.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 38.5% from the field and 28.0% from the three-point range.
Jeff McDonald of San Antonio Express-News recently did an interview with Dieng in which he revealed that he is officially retired from playing (h/t HoopsHype).
Via McDonald: “When Gorgui Dieng’s playing career ended this fall, he asked the Spurs if he could stay on as an unpaid intern. The Spurs agreed, on the condition he let them pay him.”
Selected in the first round by the Utah Jazz, but immediately traded to Minnesota Timberwolves, Dieng played 628 games (209 as a starter) while averaging 7,3 points, 5,6 rebounds and 1,3 assists in 20,9 minutes per day.
In addition to the T-Wolves, Dieng also played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta Hawks and the aforementioned Spurs.
