Senegal loses to Team USA in FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying

Senegal lost to a dominant team USA women’s national basketball team by110–46 on Wednesday at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Aside from a brief one-point lead by Senegal early in the game, the Americans controlled the contest throughout and led by as many as 66 points. Team USA shot an impressive 59 percent from the field, while Senegal struggled offensively and connected on just 26 percent of its attempts.

Kiki Iriafen, a Nigerian-American forward for the Washington Mystics, contributed six points in 17 minutes off the bench. Rhyne Howard led the Americans with 21 points, while Caitlin Clark added 17.

For Senegal, Nene Ndiaye and Khadija Faye each scored 12 points to lead their team.

Team USA’s next game is against Puerto Rico women’s national basketball team at 8 p.m. ET, with the matchup set to air on truTV. Although the Americans will play four more games in the qualifying tournament, they have already secured their place at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, which will be held this September in Germany.

Senegal will return to action later today against Spain women’s national basketball team.

In other results, the Nigeria women’s national basketball team lost to South Korea women’s national basketball team after opening the tournament with a 70–37 win over Colombia women’s national basketball team. Victoria Macaulay scored 22 points for Nigeria in the defeat. Nigeria will next face the Philippines women’s national basketball team.

Meanwhile, the South Sudan women’s national basketball team is still searching for its first win after losses to Czechia women’s national basketball team and Brazil women’s national basketball team in its opening two games. South Sudan’s next matchup will be against the China women’s national basketball team on Saturday. 🏀
